What is TRUST test?

The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) is a free FAA online test required of every recreational drone pilot in the United States before flight.

TRUST was launched in 2021 to satisfy the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 requirement that recreational pilots demonstrate basic safety and regulatory knowledge. The test is delivered free through approved test administrators (the Academy of Model Aeronautics, Pilot Institute, UAV Coach, the FAA itself, and others). It takes most pilots 20–45 minutes and you cannot fail — incorrect answers immediately show the correct response and the test continues until you pass.

Upon completion, you receive a TRUST completion certificate. You must keep this with you (digital is fine) when flying recreationally and produce it on FAA or law enforcement request. There's no expiration; you take it once.

TRUST is required only of recreational pilots flying under 49 USC 44809. Part 107 commercial pilots don't need it — their Remote Pilot Certificate covers the same and more.

What this means for pilots

Take the TRUST test before your first recreational flight. It's free, one-time, and pilots have been cited for not having it. Save the PDF certificate to your phone. If you later upgrade to Part 107 for commercial work, the Part 107 certificate replaces the need for TRUST.

FAQ

Can I fail the TRUST test?

No. The format walks you through every question; incorrect answers show the right answer and continue. Everyone who completes it passes.

Does TRUST expire?

No. You take it once.

Where do I take TRUST?

Any approved test administrator. The FAA maintains a list at faa.gov/uas/recreational_flyers/knowledge_test_updates. Pilot Institute and UAV Coach are the most common free providers.
