What is DC Special Flight Rules Area / Flight Restricted Zone?

The DC Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) is a 30-nautical-mile circle centered on Reagan National Airport (DCA), with a 15-nautical-mile inner Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ). Drone operations are effectively prohibited in the FRZ; the SFRA outer ring requires individual authorization.

The DC SFRA was established after the September 11, 2001 attacks. It's a 30-nautical-mile (35-statute-mile) circle around Reagan National Airport, codified in 14 CFR § 93 and FDC NOTAM 4/0811.

Within the SFRA: • 0–15 nm: Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ). Drone operation prohibited. • 15–30 nm: SFRA outer ring. Drone operation requires individual FAA authorization beyond standard LAANC; the FAA generally does not approve recreational requests.

The FRZ encompasses Washington DC proper, Northern Virginia, and the Maryland suburbs of Bethesda, Silver Spring, and parts of Prince George's County. Iconic locations (National Mall, monuments, White House, Capitol) are inside the FRZ and are also covered by NPS bans where applicable.

Violation of the SFRA / FRZ triggers immediate ATC alerts, possible interception by USAF/CBP aircraft, and severe FAA enforcement — including criminal referral.

What this means for pilots

Don't fly drones in DC. Even at suburb-distance from the city, you're inside the SFRA and need individual FAA authorization that's rarely granted. Loudoun County, VA (west of Dulles) and Frederick, MD (north) are the closest legal flying areas.

FAQ

Can recreational pilots fly in the FRZ?

No. The FRZ has no recreational exception. Individual FAA authorization is theoretically possible but not granted for routine recreational use.

What about fireworks or events on the Mall?

Often subject to additional NOTAMs, but the FRZ is the underlying restriction. Drone footage of DC events is filmed by helicopters with specific permits.

How far do I need to drive to fly drones?

Loudoun County (Leesburg, Purcellville) is outside the SFRA to the west. Frederick County, MD is outside to the north.
