Can I fly my drone in San Diego?
San Diego is the most aggressively restricted-airspace coastal metro in the US — Naval Air Station North Island, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and SAN International stack three controlled-airspace systems on top of the city. LAANC fills in the gaps but most of the picturesque coast is military-adjacent.
Airspace overview
San Diego International (SAN) Class B sits centrally; NAS North Island and MCAS Miramar Class C / restricted airspace cover the rest. LAANC ceilings from La Jolla through Coronado are usually 0–100 ft. The east county opens to Class G past Alpine.

FAQ — drones in San Diego
Can I fly drones at Sunset Cliffs?
Class B inner ring with low LAANC ceilings; verify the per-cell ceiling. Local park rules also apply.
What about Balboa Park?
City park drone ordinance prohibits takeoff/landing without a permit. Airspace overhead is also restrictive.
Are seals at La Jolla Cove a legal issue for drones?
Yes — federal Marine Mammal Protection Act enforcement plus a San Diego city ordinance specifically prohibit drone harassment of pinnipeds at the Cove and Children's Pool.
Can I fly in Coronado or over the bay?
No. NAS North Island controls that airspace. Unauthorized flights are taken seriously by base security.
