Can I fly my drone in Los Angeles?

LA's drone problem isn't airspace alone — it's airspace plus 33 separate municipal park ordinances plus a Hollywood-driven set of stadium TFRs. The pretty shots usually require driving up the coast or out to the desert.

FAQ — drones in Los Angeles

Can I fly a drone in Griffith Park?

No. LAMC § 56.31 bans drone operation in any LA city park. The Hollywood Sign view is a frequent takedown target.

Can I fly at Santa Monica or Venice Beach?

Both are inside SMO Class D and under LA County beach drone restrictions. LAANC and a county permit are typically both required.

How close can I get to the Hollywood Sign?

There is no airspace-level prohibition on the sign itself, but every legal takeoff point nearby is either a city park (banned) or fenced-off private land. In practice: not without a film permit.

Where do real estate drone pilots actually fly in LA?

Most operate under LAANC in 0–200 ft cells, schedule before 8 AM to avoid traffic, and avoid Class D rings entirely when possible.
