Can I fly a drone at Grand Canyon National Park?

No. Grand Canyon National Park is under the National Park Service drone ban.

Operating, launching, or landing a drone on or over NPS-managed land is prohibited under 36 CFR § 1.5(f). Penalties: up to 6 months imprisonment and $5,000 fine. Adjacent USFS, BLM, or state land may permit drones — see legal alternatives below.

The Grand Canyon is the most-iconic American landscape and one of the strictest drone bans in the country. Federal regulators track drone violations here aggressively because of helicopter tour operations and visitor density.

Why drone pilots want to shoot here

South Rim sunrise / sunset over the canyon. Bright Angel Trail. Mather Point panorama. The Colorado River from elevation.

Where you CAN fly nearby

Adjacent USFS, BLM, and state-managed land that typically permits drone use with appropriate rules.

  • Kaibab National Forest (USFS)

Surrounds the park on the south, west, and east. Drones allowed in non-Wilderness areas. Many cells along the Class G airspace permit 400 ft AGL.

  • Bureau of Land Management land near the canyon

Significant BLM holdings in northern Arizona. Drone flight allowed with conservation rules.

  • Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

BLM-administered; drones allowed with rules. Spectacular Marble Canyon viewpoint.

  • Tusayan area outside the park entrance

Class G or LAANC-permitting cells for some perimeter views.

FAQ — Grand Canyon National Park

Can I fly drones at the Grand Canyon?

No. NPS-wide ban applies to the entire park including all rim viewpoints, the inner canyon, and the Colorado River corridor through park land.

What about flying from outside the park?

Kaibab National Forest surrounds the park on most sides. Drone flight allowed in non-Wilderness USFS areas, but the NPS ban applies if your drone enters airspace over park land — not just where you launch from.

Can helicopters fly at the canyon?

Yes, under specific permits. Tour helicopters operate at the East and West Rim outside the park. Drone operators are not granted similar exceptions.

What's the penalty?

Up to 6 months imprisonment, $5,000 fine. Rangers issue citations. Higher-profile incidents (tourist drones near visitor centers) result in arrests.

Park boundaries can be irregular. Verify the boundary of any alternative location before flying — adjacent USFS / BLM Wilderness areas have their own drone ban under different statute. Altoa is not the FAA or NPS.
