Can I fly my drone in New York?

New York City is the hardest US metro to fly a drone in legally. Five FAA-controlled airports, a 30-mile JFK SFRA, and a NYC Administrative Code that bans takeoff from any city property combine to make almost every flyable spot a Class G suburb a half hour outside Manhattan.

Airspace overview

The five boroughs sit under overlapping Class B from JFK, LGA, and EWR. LAANC ceilings inside Manhattan are predominantly 0 ft AGL — meaning even an authorized commercial flight requires an FAA airspace waiver. Recreational pilots have the same airspace constraints under 49 USC 44809; in practice this means flights anywhere south of the GW Bridge require LAANC approval first.

FAQ — drones in New York

Can I fly a drone in Central Park?

No. NYC parks rules ban drone takeoff and landing from any park property. Even if airspace permitted it, the city ordinance does not.

Where can I legally fly a drone in NYC?

FAA-designated recreational flying areas in Brooklyn (Marine Park, Calvert Vaux Park, Floyd Bennett Field) are the closest legal options inside the city limits.

Do I need LAANC in NYC?

Almost always yes — Class B from JFK, LGA, and EWR covers nearly all of NYC. Many cells have a 0 ft ceiling, requiring an FAA airspace waiver rather than auto-LAANC.

What about the Statue of Liberty or Brooklyn Bridge?

Both are off-limits. Statue of Liberty is NPS no-drone. Brooklyn Bridge sits under heavy Class B and the city park ban applies on either approach.
